Walk around the US capital with DC by Foot that runs a two-hour pay-what-you-like National Mall tour. The guides are experts – or so they say -- if you agree, pay a bit more. If you feel he or she came unprepared, dock them. These are popular so it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed.

Ontario golf

Register on Cobble Beach Golf Resort’s website and get a free round of golf. Besides your full name, email and date of birth, you’ll be expected to fork over your average golf score. If you don’t mind divulging that information on the Internet, you’ll receive a certificate for free green fees on your birthday. Read more on Cobble Beach on page 28.

Via Rail

Parks Canada

You can now rent equipped campsites at nine national parks that come with a tent, sleeping pad, a cook set, a kitchen shelter and a lantern donated by Mountain Equipment Co-op. Fees vary. Lunenburg, NS

Cozy Smugglers Cove Inn is right by the Lunenburg docks and surrounded by galleries, shops and restaurants. There are 39 rooms, each with free Wi-Fi and some rooms offer views of the harbour. Free parking. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops within a five-minute walk. Rates in June, July and August start at $109.
